Borage oil, derived from the seeds of the Borago officinalis plant—also known as starflower for its distinctive blue blossoms—is a natural oil primarily valued for its exceptionally high concentration of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an essential omega-6 fatty acid. Borage oil is one of the richest plant sources of GLA, typically containing between 18% and 26%, which is about twice the amount found in evening primrose oil. As the human body cannot synthesize GLA on its own, it must be obtained through diet or applied topically.
